Hi everyone,

We are a public aquarium with two groups of five axolotls, one off display and one on display. They are all siblings raised together but divided into two groups as the display tank wasn't big enough for all of them.

We don't want our axolotls to have offspring so have been freezing the eggs, but we've been finding a few hatchlings under the pebbles and sadly had to euthanize :( We are considering separating our males from females to prevent this in future, but I wanted to know if anyone had experience of whether this will cause any aggression?

The two groups have been separate for about 9 months. They are in big tanks with lots of hiding places and we don't see any aggression in the mixed groups at the moment.

Many thanks in advance.

No, axies don't generally get agressive in single sex groups. I have 7 males in a large tank together, and 5 females together - both tanks without issue unless one gets in the way at feeding time.

Thank you very much :)

Sooo many eggs. I need to give this bunch something to else play with than each other!
