Sick axolotl? Flattened gills.

Does anybody know any possibilities of why my axolotl, Spector, who I’ve had for two years, is suddenly deciding to have his gills flat against his head? I don’t believe it’s the water and I feed him regularly. Any guidance would be helpful. Thank you.

regarding gill placement the water should be tested as it can be a sign of water issues.
make sure there is good water oxygenation and that any sand/substrate is regularly turned over to prevent gas/debris build up.
