Over the last 2 days, my baby axolotl, Toothless, has been very sick. I thought he was just bloated. When he didn't get better, I put him in a shallow container because floating was stressing him out. Last night he was floating on his back unable to flip himself, so I flipped him and put his favorite hide in the container on its side so he could rest on it and keep from flipping. This morning he seemed better. He was pooping as I was leaving for school but it seemed to be stuck to him by something clear...I assumed it was because he hadn't pooped for almost 2 days so it was just still coming out.

Now he seems to be worse again and there seems to be something red now. He has white "spots" on his belly, but they could just be part of his pattern, I am not sure. He's seemed to have pooped, as you'll see in the photos, but it's not one "big poop" it is a few little ones, although that may have nothing to do with it and it could have just broken up while I was at school.

Water levels are all good. His tank was clean, all tests were good. My other axolotls are fine as of now. He's about 4 inches, in a 10 gallon (temporary, he is just very little right now) that is very clean and stays 66-68 degrees.

I think veterinary attention is needed. The redness looks potentially like septicaemia.

I think so too. I cannot find one that know about axolotls or amphibians at all around me, or even far away from me.....but I am looking. poor baby.

Here's a listing for Herp Vets in Michigan. The listing was last updated in 2010 so it may not be as accurate as it could be. When I needed a herp vet I found a listing like this and had to call several as some were no longer in business or had moved, but in the end I found one that was on the list AND was recommended by my regular vet. I had to drive a good distance but it was worth it as the herp vet saved my newt.

So try the list and you could also try calling a regular vet's office and asking if they have any knowledge of good herp vets in your area.

Herp Vet Connection

Hope this helps!

Thanks! I've been calling. A few are no longer seeing them but I found one in indiana I am going to try. I hope it works out.

Toothless did not make it through the night. :-( poor baby. I wish I would have noticed sooner.

I am sorry to hear Toothless did not pull through :(
