Slimy seaweed

I have two questions about my newt Scooter. He seems to wind up covered in this seaweed like stuff that limits his ability to swim (its almost like his legs are tied) The water isn'nt that dirty by the time this happens and I end up trying to pick it off him. Also lateley he has been walking on the bottom underwater and staying there a really long time, he looks tired or lazy.

What type of newt is he? Newts are supposed to be lazy. Newts don't swim that much either usually they walk along the bottom.

The slimy stuff is probably shed skin. It often catches round the back legs of my newts when they shed.
