Took a little time from a fishing trip to herp some forest and swampland in southern Louisiana. I come to this same stretch of forest every other week(its owned by my boyfriend's family) to go walking, and flip logs! The pictures aren't the best quality, since i snapped them on my phone. Louisiana has an array of wildlife, so I'm glad to share them here.

First log flip! Bufo Fowleri! At least a believe so, I'm not too versed on LA herps, so correct me if I'm wrong!

It was adorable. The only thing that makes me unsure it was a Fowler's Toad was his tummy--it was kind of mottled, but otherwise pale.

Onward I trekked! Crossing a small swamp, i noticed a long neglected crawfish trap sitting in the water. Decided to check it and remove it so nothing would be trapped and then drown in it. I've caught Amphiumas and watersnakes in traps before, so they're always fun to check, even if unbaited. This particular trap had a small catfsh, three large crawfish, and one itty bitty baby Mississippi Mud Turtle(Kinosternon subrubrum hippocrepis) I think they call them stinkpots here.

It was extremely shy, and would not come out of its shell for me. I let it go nearby, but it was adorable

Deeper into the swamps:

I have a ton more pictures of this swamp(with a slightly better camera in my albums if
anyone wants to take a gander. I love this place, and I'm lucky to be able to visit it whenever I want.

Went fishing later that evening down a channel of the Atchafalaya River

They had enormous invasive Asian Carp flying out of the air, attacking the boat. These things were huge, I was hoping one would fly into the boat.

Now for a little I spy!

See that tiny thing out near the shore? Any guesses? If you guessed a ridiculously cute baby Alligator then you win! It was floating along, we tried to cast our lines near it in hopes of catching it, but it went under. What i would have given to have wrangled it onboard!

Ended my night with a gorgeous sunset on the river!

Ended my day, but not my night! We stayed with my boyfriend's brother, and he happens to have a neat pond in the back. I can't resist a good pond adventure, so who was creeping in that pond at around midnight? <---This guy.

The mating calls were nearly deafening, toads, bullfrogs, leopard frogs and all manner of other things were screaming by the time i got there.

The toads were extremely brazen, i think these are gulf coast toads, Incilius valliceps, but I might be wrong. Look at this guys sac:

Impressive! :)

There were dozens of toads swarmed around the pond, calling like mad, so I decided to round em up!

herp168.jpg

They would start squeaking when placed together, needless to say it was very very cute.

Found this guy chilling on the deck of the pond. Hyla Cinera

herp171.jpg

He was enormous and fat for a green treefrog! I wanted to take him home with me!

Here he is looking cute behind a leaf.

And lastly, on the way in, this little guy on the porch.

Those ARE Gulf Coast toads, Incilius nebulifer [I.valliceps occurs in Central America].
I haven't verified the Anaxyrus fowleri - southeastern Anaxyrus have several undescribed species confused with other species.

Yes, nebulifer would be correct, did some research using Louisiana Herp societies checklist. Still cant decide what that top toad is. Looks sort of like Anaxyrus quercicus too.
