Hi, I'm new on this Forum and have some time now been the owner of two newts, and got the informationthat it was some Cynops orientalis. But I have never thougt that due to the size and coluor.
What species is the two newts? They are around 14cm long. I now think Cynops Ensicauda. Is it? And gender?

Yesterday I got 3 new (1.1.1) newts from one other family. Cynops orientalis? The male and female are both around 8-10cm. And the little one is born 2007 and a male, I think. He is little smaller then the parents (6-7cm?), When could we have them in the same tank? Or should I try to sell him and have some new blood in the breeding insted? (Pics: male, female, offspring)

Thanks!!

Well, although they look rather weird, i´d say they are Cynops ensicauda ensicauda.

As for the gender, the second one appears to be female, and the first one i can´t tell without a picture of the cloaca.

There is no need to get rid of the CB male. Specially not if you are going to exchange it for a WC animal...
You can keep the three together, there won´t be problems.

Thanks Azhael. I have looked at pic and as you said, they are rather weird looking.

If the seconed one is a female the first one is a female too, there cloacas look the same. And they have never tried to mate or something like that.

What´s CB and WC?

Oh, sorry...
CB= Captive bred
WC=Wild caught

Thank you both for the explanation!

Not looking for any wild caught animals, but other captive bred ones .

Oh, that´s just music to my ears xD

Sadly, C.orientalis is rarely bred succesfully in captivity (at least rarely when considering how common the species is in the hobby) and is definitely not commonly available for sale. If you still want some CB stock to add variety to your group in a near future, i could give you a couple of juveniles, if you want them. Otherwise, with a little patience you should be able to find some CB ones for sale, sooner or later.

This adults I have lay many eggs and the owner before me have suceeded to bring up some juveniles and have promised me to help me out with the way she did it... I hope it will work out, I know its hard work. But I would love some juveniles! :happy:

I'm a breeder of Leopard geckos since 2001, so the step in to trying to breed newts is a new challenge for me. Haven't meet any other newtbreeder here in Sweden yet.

Thanks and goodnight!
