Hello all. I encountered these salamanders burrowed under moss in the wetlands of southwestern Alabama. They were all only 1-2” long. They are part of the dwarf salamander (E. quadridigitata) complex, but the location they reside in is a habitat for three separate species—E. hillisi, E. sphagnicola, and E. paludicola—all of which look extremely similar if not the exact same. I don’t expect any of you to be able to identify this salamander, but any tips on how to differentiate these species, whether by behavior or geography, would be greatly appreciated. And at the very least, I hope you enjoy looking at these tiny beauties.
