Sponge filters?

I’m using a sponge filter for my newts enclosure and I was wondering if it’d still work if I took the weighted base off? I’m putting it Behind the background and it doesn’t fit with the base.

The base keeps it from floating. If you can keep it down then it's fine. Alternatively you can buy a sponge filter with a suction cup like this:
