heya guys, quick question. i'm thinking about buying some starglow pebbles to go (along with sand) in my axie's tank. would the fact that they glow in the dark stress out/annoy an axolotl? jus wunna get the right stuff in to start with before i start cycling :)
cheers

Hi Jimmybob,

I would recommend you not to get the starglow pebbles. As you correctly identified, sand is the best and only substrate that is suitable.

Although i must say your idea is creative and artistic, and i can imagine the visual splendour of the glow in the dark pebbles, the main problem is that the pebbles pose an impaction risk in the unfortunate event that an axie ingests one. Impactions can be lethal.

On another note, the axies themselves should not be stressed out by the glow itself . If you can get giant chunks of glow in the dark rocks, which are bigger than the axie itself, i think it would be fine (and spectacular).

Cheers.

Hey Dark!! I don't know about where you are or what is available out there but here the glow in the dark pebbles would be to large for an axolotl to eat. I actually haven't seen them in years though. HHmm cool thoughts wandering around my head now....

If they look small enough to be swallowed could you glue them together with sealant or on to something so they can't be swallowed.
If an axie did swallow one would you see it glow inside the axie???

thanks for the input guys, theres a picture of some of the pebbles next to a fifty pence piece on the starglow website http://www.glowtec.co.uk/glow-pebbles-info.htm of which they seem to be about the same size/slightly bigger. is this large enough to ensure they wouldnt be swallowed or is it just not worth the risk?
cheers

Hi Jimmybob,

In my opinion, they look small enough to be ingested and still would pose some risk for impaction.

I do agree the pebbles are beautiful though.

Cheers

ah fair enough, ill have to look for some extra large ones, i like the idea of glueing some together, though would have to find out about the right kind of glue to use.

They look great. I think aquarium sealant would stick them (it sticks slate). The web site warns that they can be sharp and rough though, so possibly your axies would get injured snuffling around them? Think I'm going to get some for my tropical fish tanks though

Hehe thought i shall be a little mischevious. You do know some axolotls can glow in the dark too don't you? Why not invest in GFP axolotls instead?

Some of our members here occasionally have GFP juveniles for sale in a large selection of colours. Check out Jake's and Michael's sale list!

I wish i could acquire some myself but alas i don't think there are any available in australia.

wow, just 'google imaged' them and they look amazing ^_^ for some reason though, it wont allow me access to the link you sent. said i might not have privelages to see the page or something

definitely going to look into finding one of these guys tho :) thanks for the heads up hehe

Aww Bella, guess we are in the same boat. Deprived of glowy GFP axolotls and can only peer through the glass pane, being envious of the folks in the states.

Fortunately jimmybob has learnt something new. I think he must be excited that GFP axolotls actually exist! Im glad i also found out they are not available in the UK. At least i won't be such a killjoy next time and burst someone's bubble. Sorry Jimmy. :(

;)

hehe indeed i did get very excited :p ah well, normal axies are still more than cool enough to keep me occupied :D

cheers for all the help
