i just bought an elite sting ray underwater filter for a ten gallon tank. does anyone have any experience witht these? good or bad?

They seem to work ok as far as moving the water around. The sponge near the water intake area can get dirty fast. If this is for a newt or turtle tank, i suggest getting another filter that actually removes harmful products from the water. For example, I use the ZooMed 501 canister filter in my Noto tank and I have had no problems with the quality of the tank since. If you continue with the stingray, make sure you diffuse the stream of water that come out of it as it can be a little forceful for many newts.

I would recommend returning this filter if you still have a chance. They are not really very good as they are quite large but have very small (and very expensive) filter cartridges. Due to the small size they are not really all that good at filtering all that much out of the water. The sponges, like Travis said, are also quite small and they clog up quickly. I can't remember if the outflow is adjustable on that filter, but I don't believe it is.

You would be much better off with a Fluval in tank filter, or a Duetto 50 or 100. I have used the Duetto and they work quite nicely. They are a little more expensive but they are also of much higher quality, have more filtering capacity and have an adjustable flow on which you can change the direction.

thanks for the info...travis what's fast? how often would you say i would need to clean the sponges?
