Stingray filtration systems

anyone ever used these?

I currently have a whisper 10-30 for my 20 gallon ( with about 15 gallons of water) tank for my three chinese fire bellied newts. I find this filter to be hard because it creates a waterfall effect & i've replaced it about 3 times in the last year. So just wondering on the stingray..

Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't like these filters at all. I have the Stingray 5 and it is bulky, clogs easily and has very little filtration surface (small carbon and smaller sponges.)

I would recommend you look into the Duetto submersibles. They are very nice, being smaller and having an adjustable flow rate. Mine has been working for a year with no mechanical issues. I've also grown very fond of sponge filters as I use siphoning and a turkey baster to clean up large waste particles and just want the biofiltration ability.

Have you seen this article on filters?

I've never used the Stingray, but the question I always have is: what's the wattage? Wattage corresponds to heat production (which we want to avoid in newt tanks). The Duetto has the lowest wattage (about 5W) of any submersible I've seen. Even so, it does heat up the water to some extent.

i hate stingray filters. exactly what abrahm says. plus they are really noisy. they are just rubbish all over. i'd personally go for a fluval plus ... they have been going for ages. don't clog to easily and are very quiet. cheers

She wants to run a waterfall, so that also limits what kind of filter would work. I think the Fluval submersibles may be one of the ones that don't connect to tubing - it's something you should check, Kylee, before buying one.

I interpreted that as not wanting to make a waterfall, but rereading it, I'm unsure what Kylee meant.

The stingray 5 is 2.7 watts. Quite low wattage, but still quite a bad filter. Also it's so low powered that you would never be able to make a waterfall with it. I'm not sure what I could help I could offer you in finding a filter that is also good at making waterfalls.
