Substrate Changes

Hey all,

I was curious how often everyone recommends changing their substrates. Talking to some people I've heard anywhere between every month to every 6 months.

I don't leave any food in my tanks and I scoop out any poop that I see, so I was trying to decide a good amount of time to change the substrates regularly. I was thinking 2-3 months but wanted others opinions.

Hi Rob, for my terrestrials which I keep on soil, I remove visible feces and change the soil about every 2-3 months so I think you'll be ok. Paper toweling soils much faster, and may need to be changed weekly or even bi-weekly depending on the size of the animals, number of animals, etc.

I change the soil/Moss etc.. WHEN it starts to stink. Otherwise Monthly or So i guess.

*Tigers are the stinky ones for me LOL

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
