I have 2 juvenile axies and i recently noticed one has a swollen stomach and troubles swimming. I have read about bloating and air bubbles and currently waitng to see if the problems will pass. If anyone has had simular experience with positive results it would be greatly appreciated.

What size are the axolotl and what else do you have in the tank with them? Also would you have any readings for ammonia , nitrate, nitrite ?

Hi Oceangoddess,

In addition to Julia's questions, what substrate do you use and what is the usual diet?

Cheers.

To answer both the questions as best as I can ( im kinda new to keeping a tank) The axies are about 4 inches long at the most, I dont have any reading on the water condition at the moment. I have just the two axies in there with small gravel on the bottom and have been feeding the tubiflex and bloodworms daily. I have been doing some reading and went out to get sand to replace the gravel. Im just worried she might of swollowed a rock during feeding time and have no clue how i would go about getting it out of her. Thanks for the replies so far..

Hi Oceangoddess106,

One of the best ways is to fridge your axolotl, the cooler temperature slows the metabolic rate and aids in the passing of any impaction.

Is your axolotl showing any signs of impaction, floating Butt up, sudden bloating, excessive floating?

Well done for getting onto the substrate change so quickly, if it has ingested gravel it may well just pass it keep an eye out for small gravel pieces appearing in the tank.

At this stage I suggest you just keep an eye on it, as there may be nothing to worry about

I give thanks to everyone who had feed back for me, we are going on day three and in regards of what ian previously asked, I have noticed that here butt is floating. Im off to do a little research of my own to see what this meens but any information anyone could contribute would be greatly appreciated:happy:

Hi oceangoddess,

Floating bum up could just mean an accumulation of gases in the alimentary tract. This could be due to constipation, impaction or just certain types of diet. Fridging and offering a variety of food types will help faciliate the passage of any material in the intestinal tract.

Cheers.

Thank you everyone so much. Today I noticed she looked like she was trying to regurgitate and a couple hours later she is swimming around as happy as can be:happy:
