T. karelinii and aquatic setups

Currently have 8 karelinii juveniles that have been raised in a shallow water setup(1-2 inches of water, packed with java moss). I recently cleared out a ten gallon tank and decided to introduce the critters to it. I think the water depth is maybe 6 inches. 3-4 of them have taken to this life well but the others eventually ended up bobbing at the surface like corks or on the rudimentary DIY island(PBJ jar lid) so were removed back to the original setup. Any reason why this happens? I'm thinking of lowering the water level a bit and then maybe adding a permanent land section or a floating island using corkbark.

I have one that's a hydrophobe. She hates water. The rest never come out of the water. It could be that they're just not ready to go aquatic. They'll go through a two year terrestrial phase in the wild before they become sexually mature. Then they sometimes go terrestrial during the winter.
