T. verrucosus range in Thailand

I found a book today showing the range of T.verrucosus in Thailand and was surprised to see the range extending so far east, along the border with Laos. I expected it to be more in the area along the border with Myanmar (from where T.verrucosus are said to flow into Thailand to be reexported), and extending a bit further southwest than shown.

I lived in Thailand for 2 years and have been to that area often, even before then, but it never occurred to me at the time to look for newts there...

Well now you know where to spend your next holydays Tim ?? Seeing Tylototritons with locality data is not that obvious overall

Here is the picture that's in the book. I assume it's a Thai variation of the species.

Henk, I went to Thailand usually twice a year for about 10 years before actually living there, and I've had my fill of the place despite some fond memories. If I go to that region again any time soon, it'll be to look for P.laoensis in Laos and P.deloustali in Vietnam! I'll never have my fill of Vietnam, and I lived there for 2 years as well. It's a question of priorities

On the subject of verucossus, here is some info on the species that was in a book from India, the title of which I didn't get:

Peter Paul van Dijk (a Asian tortoise specialist) once gave me some information Tylototritons he found in (I think) Thailand. It was published in the Newsletter of our Salamander society but I do have to look it up at home. I'll be back on that...

That's very interesting! In another book about Thailands herps, I also found pictures of this tylototriton. The pictures were taken in Phu Luang Loei, wich is even more to the east than the black area on the above map.

It appears there's a paper by Chulalongkoren University Prof. Thosaporn Wonaratana called "Range extension of the crocodile salamander, Tylototriton verrucosus, to Phu Luang, Thailand" in Nat. Hist. Bull. Siam Soc., 1984, 32(2), 107-110.

Exactly there Peter Paul van Dijk found his animals while searching for Manouria impressa(turtles). It was published in our newsletter number 13 (1998). He found the animals in may at 1400 m in Phu Luang reserve norhtern Thailand. He describes some details on climatolgoical level.

Ya know... page 88 of Amphibians and Reptiles of Peninsular Malaysia and Thailand, by Chan-ard, Grossmann, Gumprecht and Schulz has 3 photos of T. verrocosus. Locality for all 3 is: Phu Luang, Loei, Thailand (1400 m elevation). They apparently occur in hillside streams there, though in one of the photos the animal is next to some 3-leaf clover so I assume that it was captured and photographed later, not at capture site.

There are still more forms of "verrucosus" to find in thailand,....This was already posted here some time ago for several times
