Hi all,
Firstly sorry if this is a tired topic.
I have my axolotl, Ari, who is around a year old in a tank thats dimensions are:
48 Centimetres long,
38 Centimetres wide and
35 Centimetres high.

I have sourced a wild type tankmate of similar size for my white Ari and i was wondering if my tank will be big enough to comfortably house them together. I have a smaller quarantine tank that ari was originally in when he was a baby to quarantine the new tankmate if my permanant tank is big enough. Also, will gender play a role in how well they get on? Is there a reliable way to distinguish the gender of axolotls, especially before i purchase it, as i do not have the space to raise a laying of axolotl babies :(

Thankyou in advance.

IMO, for two average size axolotls I would not go smaller than a 20L ([FONT=Arial, Verdana, sans-serif]76.2cm x 33.0cm x 33.0cm) so I do not think your current tank is big enough. I say average because I got a couple adult axolotls last summer, and two of the lady's axolotls are giants! I would never be able to keep even one of those in a 20L! However my other adult axolotls are smaller, and IMHO two of those would be OK in a 20L.

I would be aiming for the same gender if you are able to get a bigger tank. If they are 1 year old and sexually mature, you should be able to tell gender of your axolotl and the new axolotl. I keep same gender in the same tank without problems.

I would never keep one axolotl in a 20L tank. I remember my 27L tank and it was tiny. I still have it in storage. I would say you want a tank 2 foot long per axolotl, I would personally anyway. Axolotls don't need vertical height in a tank, they need horizontal space. Wide and long. Or at least long.

The general rules are 10 gallons per axolotl. Which is 45 litres per axolotl.

I think my abbreviation was not clear...

20L = 20 Long aquarium, not a 20 Liter aquarium.

20 inches, centimetres?

I would get a larger tank for a pair. Especially since you are unaware of the tankmate's gender. I would be concerned about eggs or them not getting along (Being territorial)

Don't put 2 in a 20 gallon long. I have 1 in a tank that size and it's just big enough for him. Couldn't imagine 2 in there!! You need 30 gallons to 40 gallons or bigger for more than 1.
