Hey gang, I need some help with my axolotl's lid. She's currently on her second lid since I got in 2020, for Christmas 2021 I got her a new lid, because the old one started to rust. Well, that one I got last Christmas is even more rusted. I got a Zilla 20 gallon long terrarium lid from Petsmart. I am kinda shocked they're not waterproof since like, what if you have turtles, they splash around a lot. Does ANYONE have any suggestions for a more permanent solution rather than buying a new one every like....9 months now. If you do have a suggested product, leave me a link, please.

If not, does anyone have any ideas of how to waterproof her tank lid? The rust spots are, of course, above her two sponge filters. What if I put like, idk a piece of acrylic plastic over those spots and once a day I just wipe it down? Let me know please, no hurry. Thank you!

Avoid any type of lid made with metal. Number one, if your Axolotl jumps, it can get seriously hurt hitting hard against metal. Number two, rust. Zilla is a reptile enclosure company, not aquarium. Their kids are for terrestrial reptiles. I'd look into finding lids designed for aquariums instead.

applying rubber paint will help prevent rust and is quite resilient to water etc.. try auto stores (not to be confused with underbody seal though)

When you say rubber paint, do you mean in a spray or in a can? We sell it at my work, in spray can, and I can get it ultra cheap with my employee discount. Rust-Oleum brand.

@Autistic Catholic I will have to make a trip out to our aquarium store but they almost exclusively deal with fish. They don't even sell food for axolotls, like not even worms. I was actually kind of surprised.

I also wanted to join this thread for answers, lol. I have liked the zilla mesh lids well enough because then I can use my fans (main form of cooling), but am getting a little sick of always replacing them. I'm just worried about getting a glass/acrylic lid and it keeping the tanks warmer

should be fine as either spray or brush, make sure it's cured before placing back on tank.
