Question: Tank Size....? Advice please

My husband works with glass and I have just found out that he is going to make me a new tank for my axies for Christmas (my current tank is getting pretty old)

Anyway he wants to make one that is 100cm x 40cm x 40cm, holding around 160 litres.

My question is how many axolotls can I put in a tank that size?

I currently have 2 axies, 1 is 21cm and the other is 19cm, but I want to buy 2 more babies (and keep them in a separate tank). When the babies have grown, I would like to add them to the new tank, making it 4 adults in the new tank. Would that be ok?

Hi Kira,

Floor space is the most important factor when selecting a tank for an axolotl, bearing in mind that axolotls can grow to any size from 7 to 14 inches.

It's recommended to give each axolotl at least 18inches (45cm) floor space. You could fit two adults in that size tank with no problem, three maybe, but four I think is too many for a three and a bit foot tank.

Four axolotls is technically 'doable' but you would have to provide a lot of hides so the axies can spend 'time out' from one another and do more frequent water changes.

When buying new axolotls, they need to be quarantined for 30 days before introducing to your axies to ensure they are not carrying any diseases.

Thanks for the advice! I will make sure that the tank is made bigger.

Oh and because the axolotls that I have just bought are only 4cm long, they will remain in a separate tanks to the adult 2 until large enough.
