I just got my axolotl today and I have a 75 gallon tank, cycled and near perfect parameters (ph is a little high). However i intended on getting at least a 5 inch axolotl. What I got was a barely 3 inch juvenile and I’m wondering if this is too large a tank for it. It seems to be doing fine as is but will the tank size be a problem at all?

That is quite a big tank but it should be ok as long as you have hides and ornaments and stuff, you could get a second axolotl too.

Im getting a second on Thursday thank you so much for the reply

Already filled all the way. Is this going to be necessary or just a recommendation?
Just a suggestion, not at all necessary! When mine was in such a tall tank, I kept it all the way filled for the filters, but put some tall, wide leaved plants in there and he always sat on the tallest leaves to be closer to the surface. You could even try one of those axolotl corner hammocks

Oh my goodness the hammock is such a good idea thank you!!

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
