Hello! I'm quite new to this hobby. Just got my axolotl last night! He's about 3 1/2 inches long, and he ate right from my hand two hours after he was acclimated to the tank. So, my question is on tank temperature..

I've been doing loads of research, and people said as long as it doesn't surpass 75°, it'll be fine. The temperature in the tank is 73°, but if I turn on my fans and put them in the window, it gets to 65°

So, what would be less stressful? Maintaining a 73° or dipping to 65° at nighttime hours?

His tank is a 20 gallon long filled with 10 gallons, as my family doesnt have immediate access to pure water, and I don't have a lid yet.

I don't have a axolotl so i could be rong. They say my newts can handle 75f down to almost freezing. I try not let it get higher than 70f just to be safe i would never use aquarium heater with my newts. If you don't want to cool your hole house down you could get small fans and let it blow across the top of the water. Somme day's it can cool the tank 4 degrees lower than room temp depending on humidity. Just going to mention it i didn't know when i got my newts did you cycle aquarium? Good luck

Thanks for the quick reply, I'll check out the store to see if I can find a fan or something. Would a fan cause flow in the tank? I don't have a heater, I did a lot of research on tank requirements. My breeder said that I didn't need to cycle as long as I did partial water changes frequently.

Your right if you do frequent water changes you dont need to cycle. I just dont know how to do that its easier for meto cycle aquarium. You can get a cheap usb fan. I don't think it matters to much about the top water current. But a usb fan/computer fan shouldn't be to bad

That fan i run all day is a arctic usb fan around $7.

I have a 20g and I have 3 fans on the tank with a mesh lid. We have the ac running until the weather cools down, but he ranges between 16 to 18 degrees, which is right where he should be. In the summer when we had 40+ degree weather, he reached 19/20 degrees, but was still ok. That's not an ideal temp but for really short spurts it's ok.
