I was (still am) getting a newt tank started. I got a tank as a gift and did a little research, put in some white cloud minnows, some plants, got it cycling.

But now after more and more research, I've decided this tank is too small, too hot, requires too much water (or a submerged hot pump), too fine gravel, etc.

so thanks, you guys probably saved a newt's (or axie's) life. and I don't mind keeping on reading.

it's an eclipse hex 5. the intake for the pump requires water be about an inch or two from the top. I can keep the motor out of the water and get the temperature down some, but it still wants to sit around 75F, with a fluorescent UV light.

I've taken the hood off the top rear and leave the feeding hatch open to help evaporation, but I need to add some fans, somehow.

Getting rid of the light should cut the temperature a few degrees. Check your home for cool spots. You'll undoubtedly have some locations that are 5+° cooler than other areas. Leaving the hood off is asking for an escape when and if you do finally put a newt in there...after removing the minnows first of course.
