As the title says. What is the BEST food(s) for axies in terms of nutrition and everything good.

Also what is a good eating plan for axies?

In general, for any animal, you should vary it's diet as much as possible. This way, you make sure that they don't have any kind of dietary imbalance

That doesnt tell me what foods are best

I know you need variety. I feed mine blood worms, earthworms, crickets and occasional treat of meal worms.

Are there any other good foods for axies?

From what everyone says on these boards, I've compiled the following list of good food items:

Earthworms
Crickets
bloodworms
brine shrimp
ghost shrimp
feeder fish (rosy red minnows)
salmon pellets
carnivore pellets
shrimp pellets

Once I get my axies (hopefully this Friday, assuming all goes well), this will be their diet, with shrimp pellets and carnivore pellets making up the majority. From all my research, it seems to be the best diet I can come up with.

Earthworms - check

Crickets - check

Blood Worms - check

Brine Shrimp - my axies hate em

Ghost Shrimp - havent heard of. Will check em out

Feeder Fish - Not to sure of but will check out in near future

Salmon Pellets - Not available where i am

Carnivore Pellets - got some just now from shop actually

Shrimp Pellets - check

Thanks for the list brain much appreciated.

Once again thanks.

Most of those things are in their diet. But will be adding the carnivore pellets today, and will check into as i said the other things.

Thanks mate much appreciated.

The "best" food for axys is the natural diet they evolved to eat. What is this? Pretty much any small aquatic organisms they can catch.

When you go to get feeder fish, try to avoid guppies. They are usually loaded with diseases. Rosy Red Minnows or reallt small goldfish would be better. Or you could breed your own guppies as food (2 or 3 males and a dozen females should keep you going nearly indefinely).

I feed salmon pellets and earthworms as a staple, bloodworms and occassionaly a mealworm or two. Just wondering, the crickets you see in pet shops being sold for reptiles, are they okay for axies? I have not had experience with feeding crickets thats all.

i feed mine mostly earth worms and reti pellets and mussels but i cut them up not feed them whole also i have fed mine sea food sticks (crab Sticks) but not very often i find the best all round food is the good old EARTH WORM lol

i just got some meal worms was just wandering if you feed them whole or do you have to do something to them first???

my axys also love a bit of marine green as a treat (commonly fed to mud skippers)

Sophia - It is recommended you crush the mealworms jaws before you feed it to the axolotl.

From http://www.axolotl.org/health.htm

Other foods, such as mealworms, are quite low in calcium, which can lead to a number of problems. They also have a lot of chitin (a structural protein in insects and some crustaceans) which axolotls can't digest, and this passes through their guts intact. Again, these shouldn't be fed as the sole food but rather as an occasional treat to avoid health problems. Mealworms present an additional danger: they have poweful jaws that can damage an axolotl internally. If you must feed mealworms, it is advisable to crush the jaws of the mealworms prior to feeding. This can be accomplished using a strong forceps or tweezers.

thats horrible!! but thanks i might get my other half to do the crushing thing!!! the things we do for our little axies...

thanks again

I just cut the heads of the mealmorm when I feed them to my axolotls.

Kia ora guys

We have a couple of Axo's at my work, and the little one hasn't been eating for weeks. All they feed them on here are the tablets. It's sad but has anyone got any ideas, I'm thinking live food may inspire him? Thanks, Ken

crickets, earthworms (night crawlers), wax worms, mealworms,

Live food is usually a good way to get something to eat. Try the items Brendan suggested.

I got some mealworms for my axy the other day. When i tried feeding him a whole one he spat it straight back out, so i cut the head off and he ate it straight away.

Make sure that you only feed mealworms as an occasional treat. They aren't good as a staple for axies.
