The end?

Hey all

About a month back, I made a post about Egon - who suffered pretty badly from the heat this summer even though we bought him his own air conditioner - turning a reddish colour. Numerous trips to the fridge didn't do much and he's been eating only sporadically even since. He now hasn't eaten for a week and as of today he's lost his balance completely; he can't get horizontal again after swimming and he ends up swivelling from side to side. He's now in the fridge but he's been upsidedown in the container. I've got a bad feeling about him this time, but if anyone has any suggestions - no matter how crazy - I'll do it!

Even after reading through old threads, I'm not sure if this is an organ failure type thing or maybe a disease. Got any clues??

Thanks!
Leah and Arryn.

but yea im sure others will disagree

Is the water in his container low enuf so his feet touch the bottom, if not maybe lowering it and if necessary gently turning onto his feet. And just keep up with the daily water changes, hopefully he will come right if you leave him in the fridge (think they cn stay up to a month in the fridge as long as temp doesn't drop below 5deg cel) Sorry, only thing I can suggest, but keep us posted.

As soon as I noticed he was upside down, I lowered the water level so hopefully he figures out that he can stand up to avoid the involuntary circus antics...

Does anyone know if axolotls can recover from losing their ability to balance like this? We're so worried!

yes they can, ive had two of my babies (when they were babies) lose their balance after heat probs and a night in the fridge got them right, not sure it would be that quick for you though.

you say numerous trips to the fridge? does that mean in and out lots ie a week in, week out etc? if so that might be playing havoc with his metabolism and hes trying to get used to the new temps.

you havent seen him take in air have you? that might be trapped somewhere and since hes feeling a bit weak might have just let it roll him over. if you do suspect trapped air get a pair of powder free disposable gloves and put em on and give him a few gentle strokes on the belly- long shot but it might help.

hope things work out for you!
