The Wooper Rooper

In Japan the axolotl (a ho ro- to ru in katakana) is also called the Wooper Rooper ( u- pa- ru- pa).
Ok, so tonite i did something I do not usualy do, I was reading some Japanese pages and I came across information about axolotl in Japan. (appearantly english language wikipedia also talks about this now) Here is name of Japanese axolotl, (ugh page cannot display Japanese. look for the spelling in english wikipedia, axolotl. its katakana. U-pa-ru-pa- is the spelling, but in katakana) Uupaa Ruupaa. (also, Wooper Rooper, Wupaa Ruupaa, Wooper Looper, etc. Its kinda how katakana works.) well anyways the name is a marketing thing. I am reading a translated article about it now, seeming I have not read anything in Japanese for over a year and a half until today...

I am jealous of all the cute axolotl toys I have found for sale in Japan thus far.
Also, I found some nice little emote icons of axolotl i think you guys may like.

Other things I found about about axolotl, I mean "WooperRooper" are the names of the colour variation. There is marble, which is the whildtype with all the flecks. I also came across some photo of the blue axolotl. It appears that the outer layer of skin may possibly be transparent or white, with an underlaying skin layer that is darker. Something like that. Anyways, you know the pictures of luetistics with blue bellies when they are tiny? It looks like that but over the whole animal and a bit lighter. Very interesting.

The cuteness of axolotl and the various personal sites dealing with axolotl i have found on google in Japanese is outstanding! so many more. Leutistics seem to be very popular and I have seen some many toys that arre the right size to sleep with and snuggle with. I am very Jealous of all the fun Wooper Rooper Japanese toys. Looks like it is time to contact my Japanese friends and import me some cute.

It is nice learning about axolotl culture in the non-English speaking or European descended people world. Anybody else know about axolotl culture in other parts of the world? I wonder if they are legal in the Philippines, youd probably need a cooling system there.

Anyways, if you have time to read translated pages or can read Japanese, the whole "WooperRooper" culture is pretty neat. just type in (u-pa-ru-pa- in katakana) and I am sure you will find something. Many pages have photographs that are interesting and varried in subject matter. Everything from clarity in the pics, differnt diseaes, and even a picture of an axolotl pooping, axolotls in pots, planted tanks, ect.

if anyone finds good links to axolotl toys for sale, please send me a link. Hooray for the Wooper Rooper!

hey annmarie could you maile me a link to the blue axie picture i would love to see it, or maby you couldt just poste it in here i bet we would all love to see it

I'm planning on naming one of my axies Wooper! When my boyfriend saw a picture of an axie he went "It's a Wooper!" (says a bit about my nerdy guy i guess!) then got really excited and now can't wait until my tank is done cycling so I can get one (or two).

Natashaja, I will upload a picture and then try to go through all those Japanese Wooper pages I have booked marked to find a link.

Oh by the way, here is a link to an awsome Wooper Ruper toy I found on a personal websites. http://www.fureai.or.jp/~ikumi/upako3.html

The photographs I found on all the personal Wooper pages from Japan also gave me a nice database of pictures I have been looking for, everything from photos of differnt stages of development to a nice guide about sexing, the pictures are so clear that ones does not even need to understand Japanese language to understand the meaning of what is being displayed. Also found great pics of transparent developing axies, can see all the internal organs!

I will scour through my image bank and on the Japanese site again to find a better picture of one labled as a blue wuper ruper.

Thanks so much Ann-Marie!! I have some Japanese friends, so I have heard all about Wooper Rooper and how famous he was after appearing in a Japanese TV advert.Awwww. Is there any sites from where I could get axie toys etc from? As when one of my Japanese friends goes to visit there, I could ask them to buy me a few, hihi

Ah yes, and would be very interested in the clear pics of sexing the axies, as I think my new axie Orangina is turning out to be a boy, but would like to be sure before separating him from his sister (As they like to do things together, and sleep next to each other..)

Couldn't figure out how to get English translation to the site, so will need to ask my Japanese friend for a bit of help.It looks like one could measure the size of the cloaca compared the leg width to find out if an axie is a boy or a girl? Hmmm

just either use alta vista bable fish(http://babelfish.altavista.com/tr) or google to tranlate the pages. Those are two translators that i know at least to Japanese-English. But, translations are not perfect and are often funny. Sometimes knowledge of Japanese language and grammer helps out a lot understanding messed up translation. I hope you can find a way to translate the pages well, because I still am, heh, I am not "fluent" in Japanese and I often have to spend extra time thinking now because I study 2 other languages just as much. Thank goodness I am better at reading than speaking :p

I have no Idea what to use to translate Japanese to anything else.

I really glad people people enjoy the links I sent.

hehe i have a japanese friend will have to ask him about the japanese axolotl scene

I got my Japanese friend to translate the sexing site for me. Apparently if the lump behind the cloaca is wider than the width of the back leg, the axie is most likely a boy. If the cloaca is shorter, then the axie is most likely a girl.

My Orangina is in between, but I think she/he is still growing, as 7 inches at the mo. Her sister Blackie is already over 8 inches, and is a girl

I am sure that informations and page would be a nice site for all those people who need to know their axolotl sex. When axolotl are still growing it is sometimes hard to sex, but one can get a general idea. My male leutistic had very very tiny cloaca and then all of a sudden, bam! he has a giant cloaca, so age/growth is a factor to sexing/sexual maturity, like for other animals too.

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
