My new axolotl (rescued after research) seems to be throwing up. We just took him on a car ride so I don't know if it's just from the motion. He opens his mouth really wide and seems to throw up. Is this normal! Please help!

Hi Ally,

It could be any number of things.

Is he still doing this?

Did you acclimate him to the new water conditions (chemistry and temperature) before popping him into his new home? And, did you de-chlorinate the water before adding him?

Have you tested the Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and pH levels? What's the water temperature?

Has he eaten? If so, what and how much did he eat?

Is he able to close his mouth? Are there any snails or pebbles (or objects of similar size) that he may have swallowed and is now perhaps lodged in his mouth?

Was it a very long car ride? He may be stressed from the changes to his environment and the travel. Keeping him in a cool, clean and dark environment will help him destress if he is stressed.

A photo would be most helpful. Are you able to post a photo of him and his current setup?

Sorry to bombard you with questions, but we need a little more information to go on.

Welcome to the forum! ;)
