Tiger or Spotted Salamander?

Which one would you want for a pet more?

Tigers are arguably more personable, outgoing, and more what someone would expect from a pet, whereas Spotted salamanders, even though they're more colorful, they tend to spend most of their time buried underground and tend to be more skittish and shy than tigers

I agree, For me though, it is especially fun to raise tigers from the eggs onward.

Spotted salamanders are cooler in color for sure, but tiger salamanders are sturdy animals. When I leave for a few days, I always check on my marbled salamanders, then my spotted salamanders. By check on them, I mean take them out, feed them, make sure they are fat and healthy. Lastly, I look in on my tiger salamanders, just doing a count, because they are just so sturdy that I know they are okay.

Yes, Tigers do seem to be a bit more hardy and less secretive than spotted salamanders.

I'm going to break from the crowd and say spotted- if only because I've kept many tigers before, but have not kept spotteds. Yet.

Spotted salamanders are more colorful, and sometimes they do better in big displays, planted, vivariums.

I don't have experience with either (though i'm getting tigers on Wednesday), but i really think they are both amazing species. Tigers are more outgoing and adjust really well to captivity, but spotteds are more interesting to me when it comes to natural history. Plus, i like an animal that continues to exhibit natural behavior even when taken into captivity, something i don't think tigers do so much.

I just wished there were more people interested in captive breeding them in the US.

As do i. So many keepers yet so few breeders. Hopefully that will change

Yeah, tigers are good for a hobbyist that wants a salamander that interacts more. I like keeping spotted salamanders in large planted, landscaped, terrariums to better observe their natural behaviors

I've found Tigers are more personable, aggressive and less shy than Spotted. The same applies for the aquatic larvae which in the Tiger behaves like Axolotls.

When I lived in North Dakota, Tiger Salamanders seemed to be everywhere. Since I've been living in WV and Maryland many years now - I've never seen them. Then I was reminded why after looking at their distribution map. The Eastern Tiger Salamander is confined mostly to the Southern coastal region. Tigers are way more visible and animated - it's not even close - Tigers win.

What part did you live in? I grew up in Bismarck, and Burleigh county may or may not have tigers from the distribution maps I've looked at (I never had any luck finding them there). But whenever I went to my grandparents' in Devil's Lake, I'd always find a ton of melanosticum and diaboli, and there are some who say there are tigrinum in the area as well.

That was many many years ago. My Dad was in the Air Force at Minot AFB, and then I was in the Air Force myself (enlisted) at Minot.

Nice, other grandparents were in Velva for quite awhile. Never found any sallies in the area (plenty of garter snakes), but I've heard that there are some neotenic populations in nearby kettle lakes that get enormous.
