I'm concerned. My husband just fed out salamander (just starting to morph, so he's still in water) a worm and instead of swallowing it it started coming out from behind his gill. So it was still sticking out his mouth AND wiggling it's way out behind his head. Um, is this normal? I've never seen this before. It kind of freaked us out a bit.

My axolotls and my tiger sals both have done this. All is well, though. My juvenile axi's do this with bloodworms all the time, gluttonous little things. Freaked out as well, but they continue on as normal.

Yes, it's perfectly normal for that to happen from time to time. Once he morphs the gill slits will close up so it won't happen once he's on land.

That must have been quite worrying.
I've never seen this with my guys. I'm glad I've read this as I would have freaked out if I'd seen in too.

I'm so relieved. It was really freaky to see. I guess it's the salamander version of spitting milk out your nose. lol

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
