Tiger Salamander Underground Observatory?

I got this idea from the old substrate idea page on caudata culture which is now deleted. It said that you could take a piece of pvc tube and attach it to the glass. The salamander would eventually borrow into the pvc tube which would allow you to observe the animal when it is underground. How reliable is this method as I want to try it out as I would never see the salamander if it borrows.
