Hey im moving house and taking my axolotl with me, its a 13 hour drive, she will be in a large tub full up of water and maybe put into a cooler bag/box just wondering if any one has some safe tips or ideas on how to travel with them

Thank you

Be sure the tub has a fairly secure lid. Until you've driven with a tub of water, you can't imagine how violently the water sloshes. You could get your car very wet. I would recommend a small tub, not a large one. The cooler is a good idea so you can regulate the temperature with ice if necessary. It also provides a second line of defense against the sloshing water;)

I have tried the tub.... I have to say it did not fair too well...so much sloshing and the axies hated it. I have moved my axies quite a bit over a three hour dive and the best way I found was to put one axolotl in a big zip-lock bag full of water. The bag helps reduce sloshing tremendously! I then put that bag into a cooler and prop up the bag to make sure it is secure. One axie per bag! This has worked the best for me and my axies who were less traumatized in the baggies.

If you do try this I might bring along a few extra bags and some fresh water just to be safe, since it is such a long ride.

Good luck!

... whatever you do, don't do what I did with one of my Bettas one time - put him in a critter keeper, open top.. on your lap. I got VERY wet! It was only a 15min drive too, don't think I could have gone longer soaking like that haha.

I'm liking the sound Of Grace's idea - large bags, inside a Styrofoam box to ventilate will work great. Bringing fresh water is a must. :)

Good luck with the axolotls, may they move happily with minimal stress, and good luck with the move, hope you settle in quickly! :D

Thanks Jennewt, Grace and Sarah

I was thinking a bigger tub she would have more room so wouldnt hit the sides if the rides bumpy and thought she would with a smaller tub??? and when ive put her in the cooler i was going to feel the gps wih towels or cloths to stop the tub banging against the cooler... and takin bottles of water to change it if needed. i dont think i would be comforttable putting her in a bag because its such a long way and the tub is slightly smaller then her tank

I want to take her and for her to be safe and live i recently lost my other axolotl due to a big earthquake and dnt want to lose her

I think if it's a nice strong bag designed for liquids, that would be fine, but I wouldn't recommend a larger tub. Seriously, as long as the corners are curved it won't hurt itself moving around in a small one, and more water in a larger tub will slosh around more violently, -he'll be building up more speed and hitting the sides harder. I agree with keeping the tub nestled in some blankets to try to minimise the vibrations. As long as you keep it dark and cool in there, I don't think you'll have a problem.

Good luck with the move - let us know how it goes!
