My axie is sick. All im needing is info on the dosage of furan-2 to give her. Shes around 3.5-4 inches. Im not familiar with dosing amphibians, so i have no clue how this is given either. I will be buying it today in an effort to get my baby feeling better. I have also been chilling her mini tank that i have moved her to. I may move her to the fridge, but idk yet. Indont wantto do a salt bath yet. Less evasive treatment for her the better. Shes still swimming around, but is floating at the top too, on her side or upside-down. Its weird. She also has a small fuzzy growth on her side near the rt rear leg.

Are you treating for anything specific, or are you just shotgunning it?

Your best bet is to find out why it's sick, and then treat that specifically. Floating is almost always a sign it's not getting enough food. What's your feeding regimen like? What are your temperatures like? How often do you clean the tank? What are your water parameters like?

Shes floating at the top. The fish store guy told me to try salt baths first . She has a fizzy growth on her side. So im going to try te salt. I was hoping to avoid it but eh... Im going to try. I positive that its fungus. Who knows where or how. Maybe the filtration is not up to par. Maybe i didnt clean well enough. Maybe its the water distribution and it was stressing her out. Idk. Wish me luck. Salt baths and keeping her cool for the next few days. I will say though, she was swimming to the bottom this morning after the tank i put her in was chilled to 60-62 degrees.

Unless you treat the reason for the fungus, chances are it will continue to come back. You still need to find the root cause.

most likely the water displacement. not getting it just right. AND it being too warm in the tank. i have been reading quite a few posts about that. bad juju for the tank and the axie if it doesn't stay in the mid to low 60s. that would be exactly what was happening in there. too warm. MAJOR reason for this happening, so all my fault. :(

i went and got a new in the water "bubble" filter. i dont know if its going to make a diff, but i will re-do the tank and start cycling the water again. she's now in a cold tank, separate from the old one. water just got changed and she had her salt bath. before i put her in the salt bath, she was on her side, and not using her right side much. now shes on all fours and leveled out WAYYYYY better then before. i am determined to get this lil one better. i offered a few blk worms and will leave it in overnight. she has not been eating, and I'm hoping she will tonight. i also took all but 3-4 inches of water to keep her from floating to the top. crossing my fingers. will keep everyone updated to her condition.

Hi nikki9093,

Water quality is usually the root of problems for new lotl keepers. All a lotl really needs is cool clean water. Simple.

If your filter is new there won't be any or enough bacteria in it to process the waste so the water becomes contaminated. Axies produce ammonia in their poop and through their gills and this is poisonous. The bacteria convert the ammonia into nitrite which is also toxic and other bacteria convert the nitrite into much less harmful nitrate. You need to know this.

What you need to do is grow bacteria in your filter by feeding them with ammonia, but keep your axie away from ammonia. The best way is to keep the axie in a separate container while you feed your filter bacteria. There are articles somewhere on here about 'cycling' , I would recommend you read them.

My juveniles were very happy and healthy in little tanks without filters because I changed large amounts of the water daily or every other day to remove the ammonia. By the way, I started my air driven sponge filters (for the permanent tank) off in a bucket and not in a tank and fed the bacteria with fish food and water from the axie tanks. That way I didn't need the space for the big tank until I had both the bacteria and the axies ready to put together.

Hopefully the salt treatment will get rid of the fungus quickly so you can get your axie back to full health. :)

Reading again, you obviously have done some reading on cycling. Sorry. It is a difficult balancing act to feed your bacteria while your axie is in there exposed to the ammonia and nitrite, though, and not really recommended. I wouldn't do it and I have many years experience of keeping aquatics.

Because you have done some research and are on here now it will come right in the end. :)

Re: UPDATE!!

After some really scary moments, and at one point thinking she was dead, she IS OKAY! no fungus after 2.5 days of salt baths. no chemicals added. no meds added. just plain old cleaning and keeping her very very cold. well, to me its cold. BUT, it helped her and it helped stabilize everything going on. she got past the fungus, and moved on to not eating and floating sideways.. the floating took a while to iron out, but she FINALLY burped! and all was well in that area. As for eating, well, i thought she wasnt, but then i saw her do it with a couple worms, then she ate all of them the other night, and tonight she totally pigged out. well, for her and for her having been sick, it was like she pigged out. so im keeping her in a non-filtered tank and doing a 50-60 % water change. i have to as that water gets sooooooo dirty with whatever it is that is in there. i think shes shedding or something cuz its pretty gross. and poo too...so yeah...shes doing shall i dare say, 100% better then when i first posted. OH, also keeping her on the cooler side of 60-70 degrees, but i prefer to have it mid 60's to lower 60s. she seems to do good at that temp. :D

Good to hear there's an improvement. :) Mine seem to do well at mid to low 60s too.
