So while at a petstore the other day I saw a lot of bamboo completely underwater and would love to put some in my new tank but I kept seeing people on here say that it couldn't really live completely submerged, does anyone know anything about totally submerged bamboo?

It can survive for a long time completely submerged, but will not grow or thrive. It will probably die off eventually, but I don't see any harm in popping it in and enjoying it while it lasts.

Hey, I bought some without knowing that it can't be fully submerged. I figured that since it was submerged that the pet store it must just be fully aquatic bamboo. Then after posting pics of my tank online someone told me that it needs to have the leaves above the water line. So I took them out and did this;
It's still gives that pretty bamboo effect but doesn't threaten my axolotls!

Wow how do you get them to stay up on the side like that? and I'm probably gonna have to have a lid on my tank for a while (nephews and niece running about >.<) but it seems like an awesome idea when I finally move into my apartment in august! (as long as my roomates don't have cats lol)

One is held up by a rim connector that came with my siphon (just a small plastic piece that hooks onto the rim of the tank and has a little hole in it to hold the siphon in place, just stuck the bamboo in) then the one on the left is just sandwiched in between the filter input and the corner.

I'm going to add that you can go to any other store that sells plants (even homedepot) and buy this type of bamboo for much much cheaper. They sometimes will even sell the really tall ones that can be secured straight into the bottom. Just make sure to rinse them thoroughly.

I live really close to North America's largest IKEA store and they have cheap bamboo...I may go get some and try this out, I feel like my tank needs some more tall things along the back.

I've also been thinking about modifying a hang-on-back filter to have a long filtration compartment planted with plants - bamboo might be a good candidate, and I think it would look nice to have a bamboo 'hedge' behind the tank.

Will post pictures if I ever get around to actually doing this :)

the plants were only about $6 each...I'm just not really sure I would be able to find the same kind of bamboo at home depot, do you really think it would be that much cheaper to find them in home depot?

Yes, it's labelled as "lucky bamboo" you'd be surprised at how there isn't much variety when it comes to bamboo you find at most stores.
