Vomiting

My axolotl Wally has been unable to eat for a week now. He normally has a diet of earthworms and catfish pellets and is fed every other day. Last Sunday he vomited up all the pieces of worm and seemed to continue convulsing for another few minutes as if he was trying to bring something else up. I've checked pH, nitrate, nitrite and ammonia levels and they are all fine, as is the temperature. I tried feeding him again on Tuesday, this time with pellets, but again after showing enthusiasm for food he vomited it all up again about half an hour later. After reading some of the other threads on vomiting I tried starving him for a couple of days and observing him. Tonight I tried to feed him again but after about an hour he had vomited it all up again. I'm getting worried that rather than not choosing to eat he is being prevented by some kind of illness. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

do you have gravel or sand? my axie swallowed a peice of gravel and didnt eat for a while after that but he soon came right.

Hi I'm Jen, Leighton's partner. We've got sand at the moment with some large pieces of slate. Wally was on gravel when he was young but hasn't been near it for over a year and a half.

ok. does he look normal. like does he have any signs of stress or fungus or deises?.

Nope - no signs of anything unusual other than the vomiting.

hmm thats very strange. im not to sure wat is wrong. maybe its some kind of internal desiese or internal damage. a week isnt that long my axie sumtimes doesnt choose to eat for 2 weeks and then just starts eating.

a week isnt really anything to worry about. how often do you feed him? excessive feeding can make them vomit up food because they know they cant digest it. id say catfish pellets arent the greatest food for him. try axolotl pellets, bloodworms etc. if you are super concerned place him in the fridge for now, if it is bacterial it will slow it down.

Thanks Sharn, I'm feeling more reassured by your advice. I'm going to try reducing the frequency of his meals and see how that goes. Other than the vomiting he is behaving much like his normal self. I've not seen axolotl pellets anywhere, where do you get them?

generally pet shops stock them but if they dont you can order them online at places like ebay etc

I had this same problem recently Jennifer, I found that once i reduced the axie's food intake as Sharn suggested my little guy stopped throwing up his dinner...
I started out only allowing 3 worms..then gradually increased the amount over a few days (only feeding every second day as he is still a juvie and eats alot more than my other) and now he's keeping all his dinner down and is currently guzzling 8 worms a meal...piggie.

Hi guys

Thanks for all your help. I've reduced Wallys feeding times to once every three days and he seems to be doing fine. Two meals so far and no vomiting. I think my little guy is feeling a bit less stuffed now
