Hi chaps, new to the forums and the hobby! Love the website. Great advice for newcomers so thank you. I’ve kept reptiles when I was younger but never amphibians so these boards are very useful.
I recently got two young marbled newts and am currently housing them in a terrestrial setup until they are out of the eft stage and ready to be moved into a semi aquatic setup. I’ve made a paludarium for them with around 30% land to water. I’ve got some java fern and java moss in there as well as some hydrocotyle Japonica. The tank has been cycling for around a month now and I have been doing partial water changes and cleaning weekly.
My problem is that the water hardness is testing as the maximum when I do my weekly check. The ph is neutral and the nitrite and nitrates are 0 and the carbonite hardness is sound. Is high levels of water hardness dangerous for newts? And if so can anyone recommend ways of reducing the hardness? Luckily I’ve got months to sort it out before the efts will be going in the tank but I want to think of a solution as soon as possible.
Thanks!
Steve
