Hey everyone,

This isnt really a big deal but I thought I would post it anyway! lol

A while back I checked my M.aurantiaca set up like a normally do to see if they are alright and checked one of their normal hiding spots which was behind a piece of Cork Bark. However when I lifted it up I got a little surprise by finding a weird Moss-like thing growing everywhere, It had attached itself to the cork bark making it impossible to lift it!!

It looks like just plain Coco Husk but don't be fooled this isnt! :L It has grown very rapidly and is simply odd, must say its got me stumped as to it's Identity!! Here is a photo of it:

I have never ever used Coco Husk, and this was never there before, the picture is just to show you what it looks like but underneath is a HUGE amount of this stuff just magically growing out of no where even on Sphagnum Moss (I Know Shpagnum Moss is a debatable thing but it was a Temporary thing)

As I said though, It isnt causing a problem or even harming my Mantella but I'm just really Curious what it is! lol

Thanks for your help!

It looks more like mushroom mycelium than moss to me. Hard to say what species though unless you bring a sample to a mycologist. I wouldn't worry about it, probably a great snack for any little critters in your set up.

Ahhh thank you for that, I never thought about that I must say! lol Yeah, it's not hurting the Mantella at all they seem happy enough in all honesty but you know, curious as to what it is because it grew so quickly! lol :)

Thank you, I will see if I can find someone to test it for me!

I'd second the fungi comment. Also I have had that happen before with setups using coco fiber husk. I think it really lends it self for fungal growth. Should be healthy for the setup though.

It doesn't look much like typical mycelium to me, and from your description of it being tough and dry. The smell would be a good indication of what it might be too..

Although brown mycelium is a feature of certain sclerotia producing mushroom species I have doubts that it is one of those.
It could be a bracket fungus as I have no idea what they look like without a bit of research.

still looks like it could be the root system of ivy or something like that..
If it is some sort of mushroom maybe if you send me some, I could try to culture it and produce some fruit bodies.

Hope some one comes up with a definite for you dude.

Up-date!

Hey everyone! lol

Little up-date I thin is in order! The weird hair-like growth has grown all the way to the front of the viv on the Sphagnum Moss and still my frogs are perfectly healthy and perfectly fine! and a few weeks ago I noticed this appear in the front right hand corner....

So I think it might of been Roots (like Frogeyes said) for new Moss Growth? This is moss isnt it guys? lol

Thank you! :)
