Hello. My axolotl just today has a good sized clump of mucus looking stuff on one of his gills. It wasn't there at all yesterday but it encompasses a large portion of one stalk today. I've been looking at pictures of axie diseases and can't quite place.

pH is 7.4
Ammonia and nitrites zero
Nitrates were around 40 this weekend but I did three 1.5 to 2.5 gallon water changes to get it down. Temp stays around 62-64 degrees Fahrenheit. I added about 1/8 tsp seachem alkaline buffer and 1/4 tsp seachem equilibrium as my gh and kh were on the low end of normal. Tank is 10 gallons . Any info and advice would be great.

You probably need to upgrade the tank to a 20 gallon long, which is the bare minimum for adult axolotls. Axies produce a lot of waste and need some extra room. Look into tea baths and see if you can roll the fungus off with a qtip. A larger tank will really help with future issues. Good luck!

Thanks 😊 He has pretty much cleared up now and his little floofs are growing back nicely (the part that had the mucus looking stuff fell off in the medicated bath). I've been pondering getting him a bigger tank anyway just so he'd have more room to swim around. I hadn't considered the other aspects, I've just been doing two 25% water changes per week (or one 50%) to keep the nitrates down and I have some plants in there too.
