Ok,I am continuing from my last post. First, for all concerned about my red-leg she is in a new tank. I took my bull frog to the vets. I got a second opinion. She is a GREEN FROG. So the red-leg was in no danger. Anyway, I still have not seen her eat, as before she would grab anything I put in front of her. the vets say she is healthy so far and that her color is great. They are puzzled however about two things. One why she won't eat. And two she is now emittng a strange smell,I think when she pees. My livingroom has an odor. She has never done this before now. I have had her since last june of july. Does anybody know what this is. The vets think it might be a mating thing. She is now in the tank alone! The vets feel the substrate is fine and i keep my water quality good. She is finally moving around the tank again. Still no noise from a frog that (talked) all the time. I guess i will keep the red-leg seperate now but she is very stressed and now she won't eat. I must really care about these girls, i am so worried about them. If anyone would care to e-mail me that would be great!!

Hmm, I don't know what your smelling. Mink Frogs (Rana septentrionalis) put out an odor that smells like rotton onions/garlic. Minks can be very difficult to distiguish between greens if you've never compared them to each other before. If it smells like garlic, then it's probably just a mink frog doing it's thing. They musk when handled roughly or rubbed, I call them the scratch and sniff frog, lol.

Kiley, hi and thanks, the frog was caught when it was very young, I guess. it was small. anyway, i live in PA and I checked on the mink frog thing and minks are not a native of PA. she does look very similiar but she has not markings on her back and the vet did the correct id. I thought I had a bullfrog!!! Thanks so much for your response. I love a reason to looking up new herp info. I think they are all very exciting.

If you havn't figured out why she won't eat or what exactly the smell is, try the forums at kingsnake.com. they have all sorts of forums and there is more than just three or four people in the frog section. Ive had pretty good luck there, people reply to messages within a day.

I want to update on my green frog. Finally she is eting again and eating well. She is chatting all the time. She has taken an interest in fishing for her food. She tried to eat a plain goldfish, I had them in there for that reason but I think it was a tad to big and she could not get the fish in. It is nice to see her doing well. I returned the redleg to the setup and she is almost back to her normal eating habits also. Since returning the redleg to the setup the green frog has begun croaking(?) again. Whatever our smell was seems to have passed and all is normal in our little frog world. Thanks for all info that anyone offered. I am glad the are well.

just to add:

I caught a tadpole last june that looked like a bullfrog tad, "IN everybodys opinion on kingsnake."

To everybodys surprise, it turned into a GREEN FROG. no one could identify it until it morphed fully.

here's a pic of the tad and the morph:
