What should the reading be for my Shakespeare's tank. It is a 40 litre tank and he is on his own. I have never tested the water until today and the PH levels were 6.2. He has been sick so I think I should start testing for nitrate and the like.

Hi LCD welcome to the forum.

A test kit is an important to have especially if your tank is a new setup. A kit that can test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph will usually do.

ph should be between 6.5 and 8. Yours is a little low but I would not try to alter it until you know what your other water parameters are since your axolotl has been ill.

What was wrong with your axolotl?

You may want to check out: http://www.axolotl.org it covers all the basic care. And a good article on cycling your tank can be found here: http://www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml
