What to keep....

So, I'm thinking of buying a couple of 100 litre tanks and I'm not sure what I want to keep. I know that one of the tanks will be used for my alpestris Alpine newts but I'm not sure what I'd want to keep in the other, obviously some sort of amphibian that would make a nice breeding project and one that remains aquatic for the majority of the year. I have a few ideas in mind but if anyone has a suggestion I'd love to hear it.

You have quite a few species to choose from which are available cb in the UK. T.verrucosus, P.waltl, H.Orientalis ,C.pyrrhogaster are available from breeders in this forum. I have T.verr available now and P.waltl in the next couple of weeks, pm me if your interested.

T. Verrucosus, C. Pyrrhogaster and P.waltl are definitely options. I really like european newts, Triturus species especially. I just can't seem to find any of the more aquatic species available anywhere, I was going to buy some from newttank.co.uk but they closed recently. I also really like alpine newts and would consider another subspecies for the other tank, but, that being said I would be more interested in a more uncommon subspecies rather than apuanus, and I have never seen any other subspecies available so I guess that's out of the question. I already keep H.orientalis and A.mexicanum so I can rule them out .

I would recommend C. pyrrhogaster, but then I would say that wouldn't I!
Seriously though, in a lot of ways they make perfect Captives. They are almost entirely aquatic from a young age, they are a reasonably active in the daytime and they seem to easily tolerate higher temperatures than other popular species like H. orientalis. The thing about them I like the most though, is the crazy colours of the males at this time of year, they look understated to begin with, but the more you look, the more you see!

I think you should hold out for the Crested Newts, I'm sure there are plenty of people breeding Triturus. I'm hoping my Macedonicus and Dobrogicus will breed next year

I know they are quite hard to find but Paramesotriton are good. Dartfrog.co.uk have N. Crocatus, O. Ophritycus and L. Montandoni atm.
