I don't really know where to post this question on the forum, so hopefully here works.

Sadly, despite my best efforts to give him the best home that I could and build an appropriate setup, my little Chinese firebellied newt died about a day ago :(. I'm a bit upset, but from what I've heard, it's not terribly surprising for pet store newts to last long as they are often wild caught. While I consider my pet store fairly trustworthy, ultimately I'm not too surprised in the end.

I'd like to try again to raise these newts, because I've got to admit I kind of fell in love with them even over the few short weeks I owned one. But not I'm not exactly sure how I can go about getting another one. I don't really want to go back to a pet store, since it'll probably be the same scenario all over again, and I want one that at least is healthy on arrival if nothing else. I was just wondering if anyone had some helpful advice on where I could find one. I've considered buying from websites like backwaterreptiles.com, but I'm slightly skeptical whether they are any better than a pet store. If anyone has any experience with these sites, or knows of an even better place to get one at, please let me know.

Thank you

Your best bet is a private breeder....if you have a city reptile and amphibian club I would get in contact with them and see if they can point you in the right direction

Have you already checked out caudatas "for sale" section? There might be some available near you. I'm not 100 % sure but I feel like I've read here somewhere that the web shop you mentioned (blackwatersomething) isn't so good as it says it is. Animals in not that good condition etc. Maybe you could try to search them on the "Testimonials" part, there might find some info?

A captive bred newt will be the best choice. I'd say even if you'll have to wait for some time, it'll be worth that! And since newts can live a long life, there might be somebody that wants to find a new home for his pet due changes in life, so a bit older newt is not a bad idea either.

I would place a wanted add here on the forum and see what turns up. Fire Bellies make fascinating pets and are very easy to care for, but only if you start out with healthy ones.

I would suggest Michael Schrom. He's always posting ads for newts and axolotls on this site and he seems like a great enthusiast. Amphibianaquatics.com has captive species as well. Guy named Peter was super helpful and friendly.

I haven't heard of amphibianaquatics.com before. I would have some of the captive bred neotenic Notos if I lived in the US.
