I have just noticed that 1 of my 3 axolotls has a white growth on some of its gills. What is it, and how can I get rid of it?

I just but both of them in a salt bath (not together) for around 10 minutes. But the wite stuff fell off them when I was trying to catch them with a net. I tihnk its because the temperature is always around 20-25. I have 3 1.5L bottles full of ice in there now. Any other suggestions?

I found the ice bottles didn't work for my axolotls, I bought an air conditioner for the room, it was the only thing that actually worked, keeps me cool too.

Hi folks,

I also used to have problems with keeping the water temp within range so I bought a water cooling unit (Aqua-medic's Titan 250)

Ever since, the water is kept to 19°C (that unit keeps the water within 1°C of the target temperature). In theory, it could cool the water down to 4°C but that would be somewhat too cold

Since the unit has no integrated water pump, you'll have to integrate it in your setup right after the filter, making sure that the water is sent through the unit, back into the aquarium

If you want to buy a cooling unit from them, do not buy the minicooler, that one is simply useless.

My aquarium has about 100-120 Liters and the unit has no trouble keeping up with the cooling

as an emergency measure last year i acquired a smallish fan and positioned it to blow across the top of the tank - this kept the water temp down to an acceptable level, and us cool at the same time....but it really doesn't get that kind of hot for too long in England, so if you're from a hotter climate you might be better to invest in a water cooler

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
