White gunk

Hi,
My roommate and I have two axolotls housed seperatly since Paedo the wild type is quite a bit bigger then Roxy the golden. We've had Paedo for about 10 months now and lately he's been having some problems with white stuff on his body. At first it wasn't very severe and it came and went but it started getting really bad a little while ago, around the time we moved him into a bigger new tank. We thought it was perhaps a fungal infection although it seemed like shed skin. I didn't know if axolotls shed or not as it wasn't mentioned anywhere that I had read however I work with frogs and I know for a fact that they shed. So, my roommate did a little research and found a nearby herp vet who seemed to know what he was doing. He took a swab to take a look under the 'scope and he said he didn't see any fungus but lots of bacteria and that in fact the white stuff almost certainly was sloughed skin. He then gave Paedo a shot and a 10 day antibiotic regime. So we soaked poor Paedo every day for an hour in his antibiotics and on the 11th day we thought were in the clear as Paedo had been doing really well during the treatment. About two days after being replaced in his tank (which had been cleaned and left dry for the 10 days while Paedo lived in a smaller hospital tank) the water got very cloudy and Paedo started getting the white stuff again. We pulled him out of that tank and put him back in his hospital tank and kept changing the water and he cleared up right away. (he did have another out break today although it's already clearing up after another water change) I've left the filter running in the large tank and after we took Paedo out, the water cleared up and has remained clear. We've tested the water and everything looks ok in terms of pH etc, the tanks are kept out of the sunlight, our apartment is quite cool but I'll plunk a few ice cubes in the tanks now and then.. just to keep things nicely chilled. The vet could only suggest a second treatment with antibiotics. I've never read about anything like this before and we're a bit at our wits end.
Thanks!

Thats weird. The cloudy water could be explained as a lack of cycling the tank (when you dismantled it and cleaned everything, you also cleaned out the beneficial bacteria that break down nitrogenous wastes. See: www.caudata.org/cc/articles/cyclingEDK.shtml). If you're dosing with antibiotics, its best to do this in a smaller tank as to not disrupt the nitrogen cycle.
