I've been having all kinds of ongoing problems with my axolotl over the past few months, mostly involving the deteriation of his gills. Over the last 3 days, he has stopped eating and developed a white spot on his back. He stopped moving around for his food, so I started hand-feeding him, but he now won't even take the food at all. The water is 65 degrees, I'm using a spraybar with the filter, I'm using large gravel, I vacuum and replace about 5 gallons (in a 25 gallon tank) every week, the nitrites, nitrates and ammonia levels are low, and the ph is a little under 8. I'm at a total loss of what to do, and at this point I feel like he's going to die for sure.

That's fungus. You need to get a large bowl with a flat bottom or something like that and fill it with a declorinated water (enough to cover the axie will do) and add a pinch of salt per litre. Leave your axie in it for 10 minutes and put it back in it's tank. Repeat a couple of times a day until it goes away.

I cant quite make it out from that picture but it looks as though there may be quite a few uneaten bloodworm laying around on the bottom. next time you do a water change, use a syphon hose and suck up the debris on the ground.

thanks, I will try that. yes, there are uneaten bloodworms on the ground. I do syphon all that out weekly, but he's not even eating anymore, so everyday more accumulate. Any idea why he isn't eating? Should i just try different types of foods?

And remember to remove the gravel soon and replace with sand or even bare floor...he may swallow them when he gets bigger!

Since he got a fungus now so he may not want to eat, use the salt bath method carefully and he will be healthy again!

Invest in a turkey baster to suck up any uneaten food and poos on a daily basis in your tank. If food remains uneaten after an hour or couple of hours you shud either syphon or turkey baste it out so it doesn't foul the tank. Also, when you say ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are low, how low? (ie; is ammonia/nitrites safe at 0 or higher than that)
