These are photos I got a chance to take by borrowing a friend's camera today. I live in east TN and the wood frogs came out last week to mate and lay eggs---LOTS of eggs, as you shall see.....

This is just one mass of eggs among many

Nice pics! I wonder how frogs and newts compete/coexist with each other in a pond like that, both adults and larvae. I suppose they prey on each other to some extent -- adults on larvae, larvae on larvae...

Tim, and to make things even more interesting, there are notophthalmus viridescens (red-spotted newts) in there too---I tried to take some photos of them also but they didn't come out too well. On top of that, there are all kinds of bullfrog, treefrog, toad tadpoles in there during the spring as well! AND a giant snapping turtle lives at the bottom of this pond, so he has plenty to snack on....

with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
