I keep European Nightcrawlers in a bin in my basement. I keep them for the baby worms to feed my newts. I keep mine in a mix of moist peat (not wet), shredded newspaper, and left over coir as the bedding in a big rubbermaid bin. I only feed on one side so the worms can leave the area if needed, and I found they really like to have several sheets of damp newspaper covering the top. If you feed food scraps, it's better if you put it in a blender for them, it breaks down faster. When I'm in a hurry I just use Purina worm chow. If you use dry food, remember to spray it with water after sprinkling on top. I also add a little garden lime in there to adjust the ph. The worms will let you know if they aren't happy by escaping. I always leave the lid off mine and do not have a light on them and they stay put. Once in a while I will find a couple on the floor and that tells me to check ph or moisture, and they are always right, something is off.
