Hello,

Over past two weeks my three year old axolotl was active and eating regularly (frozen blood worms and red wigglers). Several days ago it vomited up much of what it had eaten. After 24 hours it seemed fine and was again active and moving around as it regularly does though i noticed that its cloaca seemed swollen. Yesterday when checking the tank I found it had swollen back legs and a swollen open wound on one side (see picture). It was openly bleeding quite a bit from the wound. I have fridged it and that seems to have helped slow the swelling and the loss of blood. The perimeters of the water in the tank is good with no nitrite, nitrate or ammonia blooms. The only substrate is sand so I don't know what obstruction there could be. I have found an emergency vet who sees axolotls but they are not open until tomorrow but said they might be able to get us in. Does any one have any advice about what the problem might be or have you experienced this before??? I'm worried he might not make it. Any help would be appreciated!!

Are there any sharp decorations in the aquarium? Rocks and sharp plastic edges could possibly cut your axolotl, if that's what happened.

Thank you for the idea. I thought I had keep it free of anything that was sharp or could be ingested, but I'm afraid it must have eaten something.
