As a teenager I did quite a bit of model railroading. I had forgotten about these until this thread came up. The Woodland Scenics company makes these great molds:

I am not sure of their availability outside North America, but I am certain there has to be a European source for these or similar products.

This website has a lot of information on making your own molds:

And this is the company I used to buy supplies from in college:

Personally, I am still trying to perfect my tapecrete technique...I am definitely no grius....yet...;)
this winter however, I will perfect making fake rocks and wood if it kills me!

We have similar pruducts and stores that sell this in sweden, so if i whant to make a mould and cast that is no probleme. The only thing is that it take a while for the latex to cure, well depending on the produkt cuality and prize. But i will give it a try, just find a nice rock formation to cast from.

How do you intend to colour the faux rock? i blend tapecrete with a small amount off water and and colour pigment powder. I use the dry brushtechnique(many different colours and dut painted with paint brush) and with water you get a more dull surface i noticed. Some go for the darker paint fist and some do it as the last colouring, i painted the crack and cavity last because it is easier to just wipe it off right away so you dont get a extra layer of colour on the brighter parts;)

I have been experimenting with paint, colored powders, and various inks added to the tapecrete, or sponged on the cured product. I have not found a method I am happy with yet;).

For the molds, I used to mix paint into the plaster of paris for the base color, then painted with the dry brushing technique. I am going to try this out with tapecrete and see if the results are more to my liking.

Try the method i did, maybe it will work for you, but sponge may maybe be att better idea to get the paint more visible. larger patterns that can probably give it a more naturalistic look. Im thinking to try this method for a new project: First dry dut sponge the lighter paint, and after i paint the darker colour to get the stone look. The last thing to get more variation at the stone is colour and pattern is to dut dry brush more light paint(small patterns) to get a even more naturalistic colour at the rocks.

Thanks for the sponge idea;)

The last method is a great idea too i think, so try that first!
