Yay for salt baths and infections...

okay, so a while ago ash had come down with this infection in one of his toes, in which the toe turned red, the skin deteriorated, and the bone came through. i treated it, and everything was fine for about a month, but now the infection is "back" and in a bunch of his other toes. first they turn red, and then the skin just goes away, leaving the bone in the open. His gills are still red and fluffy, and he's eating like normal, just not putting his feet on the ground.

I just gave him a salt bath, and he's in the fridge now (i'm using Stress Coat for the water), but some questions. anyone heard of this? is it caused by, say, ammonia build-up? is it okay to use rock salt? can i put a lid on the container, or should it stay open?

any help would REALLY be appreciated.

Does he share the tank with fish or anotehr axolotl, snail or algae eater?

If it had just been caused by ammonia, alot of the other body would also be effected, you'd think.

Nope, Ash is in there all by himself, and yeah, so far it's only his toes. I just gave the tank a whole cleaning, and am going to start cycling again tonight. I guess Ash will be okay living in the fridge for a while, and then in a smaller tank with daily water changes. ::sigh:: i just wish i knew what did it. His little toes look so sad.

what about decorations? anything ceramic or glass?

oh, there was a lady a while back that had this problem, the tops of the feet would sort of rot away. it was only a few months ago so maybe do a search or have a read back. she did a skin scraping (which i think might be called for to find out what the prob is) and it turns out there was a few things contributing to it. sorry i cant remember what they were called though!

do keep up the salt baths in the meantime 2-3 times a day with normal ratios (2-3tsp per litre) and keep him in the fridge. the lid can be on as cold water holds quite a bit of oxygen but if you feel better puting some holes in the lid go for it.

ive been reading everyones posts i was so glad to read the salt ratio one more question please when you put them in the fridge how much water and how large a pan i assume they are in there just by themselves no plants or sand thank you

Fran, if your axie is a floater (if hes floating), use only enough water for him to be able to touch his feet on the ground. Re the size.. id say that would be up to your discretion, and would depend of how old/big your axie is. And your right, no sand or plants.
