Zilla turtle filter for newts?

Has anyone used the Zilla in-tank turtle filter for newts? I'm using a sponge filter right now, but like the idea of a filter that pulls in particulate matter.

I'm worried that the Zilla filter's intake (it runs along the bottom of the filter) and output might be too strong of newts.

Thoughts?
