We got a 20 gallon a few days ago since ammonia was getting high in the ten gallon and she seems to like it better but she also seems to like hiding behind the filter more. She did it some in the old tank too. I'm scared she's gonna hurt herself or squish her little body too much but she seems to like it back there. Ammonia and nitrite have been a little high but we've been doing water changes almost daily and I don't let total levels get past 0.5. other than that water quality is good. Is this usual axolotl derp or something to be worried about?

Whats the temperature like? Back before I got my water cooler my axololtl used to do something similar. Also unless theres something sharp there its not much of a problem. Otherwise its most likely axie derp

It's been between 68 and 70 which ik is high but it's been over 100° F every day where I live so we've been doing ice packs and frozen water bottles

Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
