Hi, I live in BC, Canada.
I've always wondered if these two things are legal.
It was hard to find answers on the government site.

1. keeping wild caught salamanders legal?
2. keeping wild caught salamander eggs and raising them as captive bred legal?

1. Nope
2. Nope

All amphibians in BC are protected by the BC Wildlife Act. In fact many non native ones are also as for many it is the family that is protected not just the species.
All the below is classed as wildlife in BC under the act, in any form:
Amphibians of the following species:

(a)all species of the family Ambystomatidae — mole salamanders;

(b)all species of the family Dicamptodontidae — giant salamanders;

(c)all species of the family Plethodontidae — lungless salamanders;

(d)all species of the family Pelobatidae — spadefoots;

(e)all species of the family Hylidae — treefrogs;

(f)all species of the family Ranidae — true frogs;

(g)all species of the genus Taricha — newts;

(h)all species of the genus Ascaphus — tailed frogs;

(i)all species of the genus Bufo — toads.

Here is a link to the BC Wildlife Act Designation and Exemption Regulation

I should add, I am assuming you are talking about local species. You can keep wild caught salamanders and/or their eggs of species not protected by the wildlife act.

    with axolotls would I basically have to keep buying and buying new axolotls to prevent inbred breeding which costs a lot of money??

    Not necessarily but if you’re wanting to continue to grow your breeding capacity then yes. Breeding axolotls isn’t a cheap hobby nor is it a get rich quick scheme. It costs a lot of money and time and deditcation

    Would Chinese fire belly newts be more or less inclined towards an aquatic eft set up versus Japanese . I'm raising them and have abandoned the terrarium at about 5 months old and switched to the aquatic setups you describe. I'm wondering if I could do this as soon as they morph?
